As a little thank you bonus for my paid subscribers, every now and then I curate a seasonal playlist, based partly on beautiful renditions of the folk songs that I include in The Almanac, with the rest made up of others that fit the mood of the moment. My spooky and folky Allhallows playlist seemed to hit the spot, and now it is time to do the same for Midwinter.
Around midwinter what I really crave is to sit near a fire with a glass of something strong and sweet that was harvested from a hedgerow, while listening to folky and wintery music, perhaps an ancient carol or two that has been almost lost to the mists of time, merging with the crackling of the fire.
And so here it is. It is good and long, folky and earthy, with plenty of beautiful versions of old favourites thrown in as well as some more obscure bits and pieces. It would do very nicely while prepping the sprouts with a glass of sherry, or as the backdrop to a midwinter celebration. I reckon I’ll be playing it on Christmas Day too.
Happy Midwinter! x
