I have a small urban garden which is kept as natural as possible and I’ve always wanted a night garden full of flowers that really come to life in the moonlight, both visually and fragrantly. I love this time of the year when I can see my seedlings starting to reach up to the skies and there’s the promise of summer (hopefully with some sun!), ahead 🌱
Green green green in a thousand shades - and the fresh scented air of Spring in every breath. Just wish it would warm up in these northern hills a little! This week is all about sieving compost, planting veg seedlings and enjoying hours in the garden, swallows swooping overhead. The May blossom in full throttle everywhere. I love the colour palette in the garden just now!
Bird nesting season, blackbirds with beaks full of worms. Great tits and blue tits busy finding caterpillars for their noisy young. We even have a wren nesting in the roof of our shed/seating area who seems unbothered by our presence as long as we’re quiet.
My asparagus bed is in it's infancy and we are a few degrees cooler up here in Scotland so a wonderful sight was the first thick green beautiful spear reaching skyward. As I walk around my garden I am careful not to tread on the large shiny beetles as they lumber clumsily about. Our dog used to sit and watch them as they climb the white house wall and after about three feet drop off! Then they set off again!
The amount of new life around the lakes near where I live. Especially the family of geese with their 3 lovely little gosling and the mother duck who was very busy trying to keep her 8 tiny ducklings in order. In my garden the birds are busy singing away throughout the day, more flowers are starting to show their faces to the sun and as the evenings draw out sitting watching the bats flutter around in crazy zigzags brings the entertainment
Hearing the dawn chorus as the light creeps through the window at 5am-ish. The luscious green of the lime trees and delicate leaves of beech. Perfect time to make a batch of Beech Leaf Noyau.
The bluebells have almost gone over but making way for the next season of wildflowers. All so vivid and celebratory this time of year.
Smelling the roses that are everywhere as I walk down the streets. A delicate, scented memory of childhood Rose Festivals when we took bunches of garden roses to school.
The swifts arrived on Beltane itself. That “screech” is the signalling of summer for me, I rejoice in all the months these birds circle above my house and feel so sad when they go and you know summer is at its latter stages. May is surely the prettiest month of the year out in nature- frothy, dreamy, abundant and fresh. 🤍
Gosh how super lovely! I instantly want to buy both books but they will have to go on my birthday wishlist! I love it when you mention Swifts! I am pretty sure I heard one this week, I looked around and just 3 fast birds zoomed on by. It is thrilling every time! My neighbour's cats have been busy prowling around more often, there is a biiig black rat around! Their sweet black one came so close to me yesterday which made me very happy. The Cornish hedgerows are stunning with white, yellow, pink, purple and our garlic heads were amazing on our tea last night. It really is such a beautiful time of year. Oh and the skies at night - I took a photo of the stars at 11pm because they were so so bright 💫 Thank you for a competition Lia!

Returned from a few days away to find the garden properly burst into lush green.

I have seedlings! And I’m not a gardener at all! I’m loving seeing the shapes of their tiny leaves develop 🌱

The very first sweet pea blossoms opened this week, deep purple along the garden fence.

And the lilac is heady with scent

Eating asparagus at every opportunity, and a trip to Belsay Hall to see housemartins, swallows, violets and trilliums.
I saw the first elderflower this week. And swallows flying over the fields
This week, I saw a field full of beautiful dandelion clocks, and a few yellow ones too.
Female blackbird searching for worms on the lawn in the morning when opening the curtains, followed shortly after by the male.
