Hello! Well, the rain came. The spring was so dry for so long that it has been hard to resent it, and it has fallen warm, so that I can stand in my kitchen with the backdoor open, listening to the sound of it falling onto the roof of the veranda, and that is hard to feel upset about. Before this latest patch of rain we had a few dry days in which I decided to plant out my dahlias, and today I have run out in the pouring rain and dug them up again, so gleefully romping were the slugs in the slick, wet soil. I will give them (dahlias, not slugs) a bit of recuperation time in the greenhouse and try again sometime soon.
This is our weekly post in which we chart the season in its minutiae. I tell you something I have noticed or done that felt very ‘this week in the year’, and then you tell me yours. But before we kick off with that I would like to thank you for your wonderful participation in our ‘Usual Spot Round Up’ over on the chat part of the app. On the first Sunday of each month we post a picture of the same place, so that we see the changes through the year, and last Sunday being the first Sunday in June, we did a catch up of the our posts through the first six months of the year. It’s kind of magical! Please do pop over and have a look at everyone’s efforts and throw around some likes and comments.
Now to business:
My first sweet pea
I don’t often have great success with sweetpeas but this year I planted them in a big pot with a big tripod of canes and they have scrambled up and reach the top and lo! The first sweet pea is flowering today. I am very proud, though I imagine I’m far behind plenty of others as I popped in to see my mum this morning and she has a good smattering. Are yours out?
I have had, so far, a fantastic gardening year. Everything is early and doing what it should. Let’s see if this continues now that the weather isn’t quite so perfect for wafting around the garden…
That’s it from me, now over to you. What have you seen/spotted/picked/eaten this week that felt particularly ‘this week of the year’?
On my short drive to work in the countryside I pass three fields - the first a sea of red - the poppies are back! The next a hazy blue vista - ahh linseed! And the last, white - oxeye daisies! What a pleasure 🌺🪻💮
My beautifully laden rose bushes are drooping with the weight of the rain, though I know the garden (and everything else) will be so grateful for it. No sweet peas here yet - at least another week I reckon. And I know what you mean Lia - I've just had salvias delivered from Mrs Raven's sale, but I'm holding off planting out slug lunch!
