Week 29
The Football
Hello, how has your week been? Here it has been a continuing heatwave though not quite as hot as before, and that can only be a good thing. It’s all very languid and soupy.
This is our community post - we track the changes of the season week by week in the little things we notice that we might NOT notice any other week of the year, and this way we build up a picture of the changing seasons, all around the world.
I tell you mine and then you tell me yours and then at the end of the month I weave them all into a big poem of the month like June’s, here. Here’s mine:
The Football
Ugh. It was so beautiful, it was so fun…until it wasn’t. One of the excellent things about this particular World Cup has been that my children are now both over 18 and so we went to a very fun bar down the road with our friends for the last couple of matches. Strolling down the hot, sunny high street, everyone you pass heading for the same event in their own ways, to different bars, groups of friends with pizzas and clanking bags of beers, everyone fizzy and excited about the same thing, sun shining, shoulders bare. Ugh I love it all. Boo that it’s over.
Other bits and pieces from this week…
I have too many snaps this week so I have to share:
I have been spending more time at the swimming lake. It is ridiculously dreamy. I found this perfecto spot.
I passed the ice cream van garage as they were getting ready to go out for the day. Busy times.
Fans of The Bench might like to know that it is not only still there but someone has added a goal!
Finally I just want to draw your attention to the brilliant Rebecca Tamas who I was in conversation with last Friday at Bookhaus about her wonderful book, The Book of Mysteries, which is a fascinating journey through the Wheel of the Year from a personal perspective but also drawing in a lot of history, philosophy, First Nation voices and politics. If you are interested in these festivals - Imbolc, Beltane and the like - and I know many of you are, this is a wonderfully enriching read.
That’s it from me. Now over to you. What have you done/spotted/eaten/shouted at/cried about this week that felt like ‘this week of the year’. Answers in the comments please.

Birds have quietened down for summer, but we had the excitement of a hummingbird hawk moth in the evening garden. And hedgehog poo on the grass, so leaving plenty of water out.
Blackberries. Already. And they are ripe and sweet. This is the earliest I’ve seen them in this state. By the time we get to August, they’ll be shrivelled up and inedible.
The heat feels so much more manageable, I had to put on my hoodie when going out at night, and I weirdly enjoyed that!
