Week 31
Wildfires and fruiting
Hello!
I hope you have had a beautiful week.
This is our community post in which we track the seasons week by week by singling out the minutiae of the week - the things we are only noticing NOW. I am keeping this one deliberately brief as it coincides with the end of the month and our poem of the month.
Here’s mine:
Wildfires
Obviously there are way, way worse wildfires elsewhere and they are utterly terrifying, my heart goes out. There is though something particularly sobering about seeing the evidence of one on your very own dog walk. This is the meadow by the woods. Not a drop of rain, so much heat.
Fruiting
We are very much into the fruiting and ripening time of the year, with Lammas coming up this weekend! The waft of blackberries follows me around the common and I have spotted seemingly ripe sloes (?!) and these beautiful rowan berries. Happy Lammas and I hope you find a suitably abundant way to mark it.
A little housekeeping: Sunday will be the first Sunday of the month and so it will be time for Usual Spot over on the chat, so get yours lined up.
And some news…I am also about to take a few weeks off. As a substack gang we are always a little quieter in the summer and I have felt my own energy waning and so I think this might be the perfect time for a brief break. During this time I wont be doing these weekly posts or Sunday morning chats after this upcoming one, but please, please do keep on talking to each other over there and sharing your weekly pics - bravest kicks off each Sunday morning!
I will be back in time for the publication of The Almanac 2027 on 27th August!
In the meantime…what have your spotted/done/eaten etc…that felt particularly ‘this week of the year’?

The birds left some blackberries which I baked into a chocolate cake for extra darkness and goo.
What sadness about the fires , the loss of wildlife on Dunwich Heath, all the birds that never make it , So much grief!
