Having been pretty much green and appeared fairly homogenous all year, the hedgerows are suddenly revealing themselves. They are all sorts of shades of red, yellow and green. Even a few browns are creeping in, though much more of that soon.
This is our community post in which we discuss the little things that we have noticed/eaten/smelt that seemed particularly ‘this week in the year’. I tell you mine and then you tell me yours, in the comments, and at the end of the month we bundle them all up in one big beautiful poem of sorts. This week mine is tapestry hedgerows. I sometimes think that if I was an artist this is the sort of thing I might attempt. Look at how many things are in this one picture: dark green bramble leaves, scarlet Virginia creeper leaves, bindweed leaves turning yellow, travellers joy clematis seeds on their way to becoming the full fluff of its winter ‘old man’s beard’ state, all strung with cobwebs.
Such a snapshot, because next week the bindweed will be more yellow but maybe the Virginia creeper leaves will have dropped? I suspect it will get more beautiful before it gets less so but this is the trouble with autumn - when is the peak? Do we wait or declare it now? It is a season of aesthetic jeopardy.
That’s it from me, now over to you: what have you spotted/enjoyed/eaten/bought/ sniffed this week that felt particularly ‘this week of the year’?

The first morning of smoking breaths & invigorating cold air, clear blue skies, the burning bush of the Japanese Maple, the swirling pink night sky of the aurora, cosy blankets on the sofa, lunchtime warming soup, a hug in a mug....welcome Autumn 🍁
Seeing the northern lights-again-from London, the sky blushing in shades of magenta and pomegranate, visible to the eye, from my own garden. Absolutely spellbinding. I can’t believe I saw this twice this year without leaving home!
