Week 7
Hellebores
Hello! I hope you have had a good week. I think I have sunk into the gloom this week. I’m not fighting it, I’m not even cursing it. I was almost surprised to read that in the UK it has rained every day of 2026 - not just drizzle either…PROPER pounding rain. I say surprised simply because I think I have forgotten there is any alternative. This is my lot. This is how we live now.
But one of these days a dry, sunny day will come along and it will smell like spring and what a treat that will be. Right? RIGHT??!
This is our weekly community post in which I ask the question: what was particularly ‘this week’ about this week in the year? And you answer, in the comments. We like tiny moments, minutiae, as well as the grander stuff. It all goes towards building up a picture of the month and the seasons as they change. I’ll go first:
Hellebores
Now clearly hellebores have been around for a few weeks but…I don’t know…is there something about this week? I just seem to be seeing them everywhere suddenly, and they are looking particularly fine. Perhaps this is ‘peak hellebore’? Can anyone confirm?
These were among several beautiful clumps in the park’s community garden. Perhaps I was just dazzled by seeing something other than mud.
That’s it from me, now over to you. What have you noticed/eaten/baked/heard etc… this week that feels particular to this moment in the year?
Answers in the comments.

The first crocuses peeking through in the pot I planted up last autumn. I was in chemotherapy treatment when I planted them. it was a dark time and planting up pots of lots of different bulbs felt like an act of faith that there would be brightness and growth in the future. So it is lovely to see them emerge just as I, too, am emerging and starting to feel more like myself again
Something wondrous about saying the word ‘hellebore’ out loud it has an onomatopoeia like sound that perfectly encapsulates the drizzle n’gloom. All hail the hellebore 🌸
