Woke to a celestial full moon over my neighbours home am enjoying the beautiful skeletons of winter trees and the slow but definite drawing out of the days which brings hope. Still feeling I’m in hibernating mode but getting a little fidgety
i have an oak tree at the top of my garden which is in full skeleton mode right now (i love that way of describing the trees at this time) and the moon is so low now that it shines through the branches of the tree illuminating the shape against the sky and casting an oak tree shaped shadow down the garden
I've had several days in the garden, which has cheered me no end. Hellebore are flowering, there was a single snowdrop out and a solitary pink pulmonaria flower already. Red ornamental quince has buds ready to burst, and there are other buds and green shoots aplenty. The great tits and blue tits have been Checking out the bird box and there are other birds boisterously making their matches! Love and spring are in the air!
A beautiful week to feel our smallness against a night sky offering such wealth. Dusted off the telescope to squint at Saturn's rings. Feeling safe under Orion's watchful eye over our house.
The New Moon -a Wolf Moon high in the sky whilst walking out across fields after meeting the mistletoe and making medicines with Charlotte Pulvers at the apothecary garden .A magical place to commune with plants in the moon phases . Back in the city I am hunting snowdrops and rewarded at botanical gardens & in my garden & others . Imbolc approaches which fills me with joy as the year moves towards the light as magnolia trees bud up & witch Hazel offers little yellow frills in the gardens -looking forward to flowers & petal drops & Soringtime & a hope for peace to be our mantra 🌿🌱
A week of stunning frosts, the landscape crisp and clean.... some amazing morning and evening skies with Venus, Mars and Jupiter all shining brightly.... the sadness of putting The Tree out for collection, a signal that the festivities are truly over for another 11 months... our blackbirds shouting at us for raisins!
Watching the full Wolf Moon, I was visited by a cousin of the wolf. As the moon was playing hide and seek with the clouds, Mars tagging along, I hear paws on the fence, and see the unmistakeable pointed ears and snout and bushy tail of a fox! The creature waited, and then trotted off into the garden next door. Later that evening, a curious cat came to visit, tabby stripes lit by the moon. A magical night!
I think they're so pretty, but I'm so allergic to them! I popped to a garden centre yesterday for a look round (well, for coffee and cake truth be told!) and all of a sudden, I started sneezing continuously, not understanding why until I spotted a table nearby full of them!
I was disappointed that I could not see the full moon from my side of the building—but there it was, still out, at sunrise, in view from my window. Grateful for a few clear nights—and mornings—that made the moon visible.
This past week has seen the snow melt here although the past couple of mornings the pavements have been twinkling with frost! I've been to collect books from the library I've had on hold and they all came in at once so I'd best get a move on 🤣 I wasn't here to cook on the 12th night so I did make a delayed twelfth night cake last Friday and it went down very well!
Another week of low energy, so spent most of the time indoors resting. Managed a little walk yesterday, though... Sparrows bringing bare, scrubby bushes to life and starlings lined up on street lamps looking for opportunities to cause mischief. Lords and Ladies beginning to raise their heads from the mud. Simple moments revealing themselves, gratefully received.
Bulbs poking up through frosted soil, full moon so bright that my labrador thought it was morning and wanted to go outside at 3am, harvesting pak choi from the poly tunnel, making carrot and butternut soup from my autumn harvest… longing for Spring to come so I can get outside more..☺️🌱
The sun breaking through the gloomy cloud and feeling my spirits lift. Returning to volunteering outside and catching up with everyone after the holidays and the extra week off after the snow and ice last week but the odd patch of snow left here and there to remind us it’s still winter even though the daffodils have buds on.
Stunning morning of pink/orange/purple sunrise and a sinking full moon! Also, my local hardware store has bunches of daffodils (99p each!) and tulips outside their shopfront, and I’ve chomped through a packet of mini eggs - are we trying to rush spring along…?
Huge yellow moons creeping up the black skies shrouded in cloud. And every morning, stopping every five minutes on the walk to work to take rubbish phone photos of the pink-streaked sky.
The moon throughout the day, calm and serene while the sun is low and fierce
Aconites and snowdrops and a buttercup too!
A gang of rooks mixing with crows in the field one day, a flock of redwings another…

Your last sentence really resonates with me.
Skeletons of winter trees - what apt and evocative imagery. Love that. I think trees are beautiful all year round too.
On Wednesday morning I awoke at 6:20 to the sound of birdsong - firm reassurance from my local robin that the days are lengthening.

Beautiful words Wendy
That’s a really lovely thought, I love this.

A definite shift in the light and the first whiff of gorgeous perfume from the sarcococca (sweet box) shrubs by the front door as they thawed out.

Oh no! It can be an overpowering scent though.
mine are across the far side of the garden but i can still smell them whenever i open the back door
Saw my first snow drops of the year in a graveyard! 🤍🤍
Our snowdrops are just popping up their heads too

I hope the returning of the sunlight and promise of spring helps to energise you Amy. Until then, take good care of yourself and rest well. Xx

Thank you for your kind words, Amanda. It sounds like your garden thinks it's spring already! Wonderful, thanks for sharing it X
