Hi Lia, this sounded really brilliant. I subscribed this evening then downloaded the app. I was surprised to find myself on a platform that included links to field sports, deer stalking and how ‘political correctness’ is threatening a bird in Scotland. Not sure I can see myself in this company. Just wondered what you thought? Anne
Hi Anne, yes the other part of Scribehound is Scribehound countryside and it does rather lean that way… The gardening part is a separate entity, as far as it goes, though owned by the same person. The owner doesn’t choose the writers for each section, that is done by a couple of experts in the field, in gardening’s case former RHS CEO Sue Biggs and garden designer James Alexander Sinclair, and everyone writing in it has complete editorial freedom over their own columns. That’s the model. I think it will be a very different beast but of course there is the question of being on the same platform as people expressing those views. I think I feel ok about it because it is just a platform, and just like others such as Twitter and Insta there are going to be people on there I don’t agree with. I have worked for newspapers who employ writers I don’t agree with before (the telegraph, not the mail eek! That would be a step too far…) and so it feels something similar to that to me. I am excited to see how the gardening one works and I think it’s going to be great but of course totally get it if you feel it isn’t for you.
Thanks for that, Lia. I didn’t really understand how the thing would work and was concerned about what I would be faced with on the app when all I want to do is read the gardening columns. The comparison with Twitter and Insta is absolutely valid. I’m looking forward to the first month’s gardening content.
It looks great - have subscribed 🙂
Thank you!
I already signed up as it looks so interesting. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out ☺️
Ah fantastic, I hope you enjoy it Bee
