May Day/Beltane

A short chat from me on the traditions and beauty of the 1st of May

Hello! It is very nearly May Day/Beltane and I’m back with another little film in my series about important markers in the year: the solstices and equinoxes and the cross quarter festivals that fall in between. I make these films because I find these really useful moments in which to stop, take stock and notice where we are, plus there are always a whole load of fascinating traditions attached to them, which we can play with if we want to. I have a microphone on but I do speak quietly so you might need to turn me up!

I’ve previously made these about Samhain in early November, about Midwinter at the end of December, and about Imbolc at the beginning of February, and I say a little more in the first one about the idea behind the whole series, if you’re interested. The spring equinox fell while I was taking a break, so there isn’t one for that, sorry! But now I’m back with May Day/Beltane, one of the VERY best moments in the year.

Lia’s Living Almanac is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

There is so much to say about May Day and I had to choose not to try to cover too much, but I hope it gives you a little taster and gets you excited about the moment to come. It’s a really, really special one.

You can find my book, The Almanac 2023, in this link, and you can find the other one I mention, Ronald Hutton’s The Stations of the Sun here.

Please do feel free to share this post if you think other people might enjoy it. These posts take a bit of doing but also draw a bit of attention and bump up my subscribers, so sharing is one of the things you can do to support this substack. Another way is to become a paid subscriber. It barely costs as much as one nice coffee per month, and makes a huge difference here, so if you think this post was worth it then do pop over and upgrade. A very special thank you to those of you who already have.

Please leave comments so that I know I’m not just wittering away to myself, and most importantly…happy May Day/Beltane! I hope you find a way to celebrate and mark it, even if it’s just by bringing a bunch of lilacs in from the garden.

Thank you for reading Lia’s Living Almanac. This post is public so feel free to share it.
