Saw my first clump of delicate, beautiful snowdrops: always a joy as they really herald the triumphant coming of spring. They stop me in my tracks, I love them so much. However they are getting earlier every year which worries me. My birthday is 21 February in the mid 1980s. My Mum always called them my birthday flowers because back then, they emerged a whole month later. That's climate change for you.
I certainly felt "blue Monday" this year. Also, I'm not sure if it is the time of year, but I have heard the robins singing all the way through the night this week. I've been buying haggis, neeps n tatties for tomorrow night too!
We have had the woodpecker return to our garden this week, allowing themself to be observed from the window. Day off today so out in the garden replenishing the bird feeders as it was getting light. And I too felt the energy of the wind making me feel so alive. I have always noticed and marvelled at the wind, but somehow this was different 🌬️. I love winter ❄️
Listening to the raging wind outside, changing plans for the weekend yet again, beyond grateful for our four walls and roof providing shelter from the storm.
Oh the snowdrops peeping through as we wassailed in our local orchard led by the indomitable Mrs Apple climbing hugging and shaking the spirits in the trees .Sipping mulled cider feasting on home made apple cake & singing seems as we head to Imbolc celebrating nature soothes the spirit🙏 & seeing the swans out on the levels this week too 🌿
An uplifting visit to see the Van Gogh paintings at the National - a great way to spend a dull grey day. The light & warmth of the south of france paintings was a good reminder of the summer
Me too, and I’m now on their mailing list 🤦♀️🤪. I adore art deco architecture and interiors. I’m also loving the different tangents Lia’s weekly conversations take me on. Xx
Burns Night prep here too - ingredients gathered for vegetarian haggis, neeps and cranachan. Plus the large bottle of single malt. Now listening to the howling wind outside, and very glad I work from home.
I've noticed it staying lighter for a little longer now. Sprouts are popping up from the spring bulbs I planted in the autumn. I found a pot of custard and thought I'd let my children work together and they made a ginger steamed pudding to go with it which they were so pleased with
The talk of snowdrops makes me want to go up into Gloucestershire to view them. In recent years, the ground has been flooded out. My mother also attributed snowdrops to my birthday month. I was a bit late (no change there!) and she told she that she went for a walk to ‘hurry me along’. On the walk, she saw snowdrops and I finally turned up that night. It was 11 March in the late 1950s. Climate change it is.
Climate change is so frightening isn’t it. Not spied a snowdrop yet but something new is bright green and emerging from the ground - I’m sat looking out into the garden as the wind swirls vigorously. My mum’s birthday is 11 March btw 🥰 (she had me in the month of February). One year Mother’s Day fell on 11 March which was very special. Xx
Days getting longer, except yesterday when it didn’t seem to get light at all! I’m loving the almanac (I have all of them!) in this edition I am impressed by the Moon Guidance by Louise Press, some thoughtful words. And of course in the ancient meadow and Cake of the month! I’m currently sat listening to the wind howling down the chimney knowing I soon have to venture out, I notice as I pop on my coat that my tulip ‘lasagna’ is sprouting and that makes me smile.
How many Lia almanacs are there Lynda? Last year was my first, I have this year’s and I will absolutely keep them. Imagine all the copies adorning bookshelves across the northern hemisphere - with the current edition being by the bedside or in kitchen /study for daily referral to, of course. Xx
Her first was 2018 I think she published it herself, I have been a big fan ever since. Yes my latest one is next to my bed to read every few days but I have referred back to other years, they are such beautiful books with lovely words, illustrations and information. I particularly liked last year where she encouraged us to have a nature table to change every month. It’s worth picking up the 2024 one if you can. 😊
I had 2024’s that’s the first one I got. I didn’t do a nature table though - I’ll have a refer back, thank you ☺️. I’m paying much more attention this year. Xx
I obviously didn’t read your reply properly 😊I have to say the nature table turned into a windowsill in my house 🙄 I did enjoy changing the candle and collecting things on my walks, like you say it does focus your mind to the smaller simpler things. Enjoy the year!
A rather dull, grey week has given way to wildness overnight. I have taken to sticking my nose into the huge municipal mahonia on my park walks and inhaling it's heady scent. It's been a week of hunkering down with evening candles for Winter watch and Traitors. The Merlin app is definitely worth it Lia - identified a chaffinch in the park for the first time!
I heard my first woodpecker too! Seemed to be drumming in the change in the air i felt this week, a bit more light and life noticeable in our little patch.

Musings from Meadow Cottage, Morayshire
The curlew are back…..
One precious (£10) snow drop has reared it’s pretty head like a submarine periscope surveying it’s whereabouts
The moon was red/orange the night before last around 4am

‘A Complete Unknown’ at the gloriously quiet and ‘unknown’ Art Deco Regent Street Cinema.
Oh wow, just looked that up. What a beautiful place!

Absolutely! And yes, Art Deco is so beautiful
The bar is nice too. 🙂

Walking round the garden, my head full of plans, feeling the energy of the wind.

Red weather warning in Scotland. Swaying, creaking skeleton trees bend as the wind rushes through them, and the rain beats against the window.
